Ice baths for rugby clubs and gyms in Johannesburg and Cape Town

Squads, not members

A player spends two or three minutes in the ice bath and then gets out for the next one; allowing for the shuffle, one tub handles about a dozen people an hour. A rugby squad of twenty-five wants the water inside a quarter of an hour, which means four tubs side by side, not one heroic plunge pool.

Gyms and padel clubs are gentler but spikier than their owners expect: the six o'clock class and the last court booking finish together. We size on that moment, and we usually argue for an extra tub over a bigger sauna, because the queue forms at the cold water.

Running season and match day

Road-running clubs in Durban and Pietermaritzburg build towards the Comrades Marathon, and Cape Town clubs towards the Two Oceans. Long-run days bring whole groups in at once, and a recovery room at a club or a running-friendly gym earns its keep in those months.

For match-day use at a rugby club, tubs are set at 10–12 °C and filled before the final whistle; a warm sauna or a shower block next door handles the second half of contrast.

Climate and power, by province

On the Highveld, club tubs sit outdoors under a hail-rated roof, and cold winter nights let the chillers idle from May to August. In Cape Town the same months do even more of the work. On the KZN coast, humidity and salt make chillers essential and stainless fixings mandatory.

A zone with two chillers and a 10–12 kW sauna heater wants three-phase at 400 V; most club buildings have it. We put the chillers on a battery-backed circuit where the club has inverters, so a municipal outage does not warm the water before Saturday's game.

Floors, hygiene and the log

Each full tub with a player in it weighs about a tonne, so upper-floor gyms need the slab checked before we quote. The floor falls to a linear drain, the tiles are textured porcelain that survives chlorine, and a towel station stops wet feet on the gym floor.

Shared cold water needs circulation, cartridge filtration and ozone or UV, a rinse shower on the way in, and a cleaning log with a person's name on it. Without those, a club ice bath is a shared bath.

A zone with two tubs and a sauna sits at 125 to 265 thousand rand indicative, installed; each further chilled tub adds roughly 66 to 140 thousand.
