Five Elements Africa

Saunas sized for altitude, cold water that costs less to hold

We design and build heat and cold rooms across Kenya — a cabin in a Karen garden, a plunge deck at Diani, a thermal suite for a Mara camp. Nairobi sits at 1,795 metres, which changes the heater in every quote we write for the capital and makes cold water cheaper here than almost anywhere in Africa.

Why it is different here

Three Kenyas, and the altitude nobody quotes for

Nairobi is at 1,795 metres

Thinner air carries less heat per kilowatt, so a heater chosen from a sea-level chart underperforms and the cabin never gets properly hot. We apply an altitude correction and show it as its own line — the commonest fault we are called to fix in the capital is a heater that was quoted nationally.

The same altitude makes cold water cheap

Cool Nairobi nights mean a shaded, insulated, lidded plunge barely gains heat overnight. The compressor cycles instead of running, the bill is modest and the unit lasts longer. At the coast none of that applies, and we size and price the two completely differently.

Coast, highland and bush are three specifications

A4 stainless and sealed enclosures at the coast. Dust packages and off-grid sequencing in the bush. Altitude corrections and half-yearly service inland. One national specification is wrong in at least two of them.

How we work

A workshop on Mombasa Road and a quote that shows the arithmetic

Panels, benches, doors and sub-frame steel are made in our Nairobi workshop and delivered as sections. You can come and see a cabin in build and a heater running before choosing anything.

Every quote shows the heater calculation including the altitude correction, and separates access, services and the coastal or dust package. If it is the elevation, the salt or the murram road that makes your project expensive, you will see which.

Imported components land at Mombasa, so there is no border crossing and no landlocked road leg. We order long-lead items first and do the groundwork while the container travels.

Questions

Kenya: asked before every project

Does Nairobi's altitude really matter?

Yes, and more than most people expect. At 1,795 m we size the heater up a step and show the calculation. A cabin that never gets properly hot in the capital almost always has a heater quoted from a sea-level chart.

Do I need a chiller in Nairobi?

For a reliable 8 °C, yes, but a smaller one than the coast needs. For a shaded insulated tub at 14–16 °C, often none at all — and we will tell you that rather than sell you a machine.

Do you build at the coast?

Yes — Diani, Mombasa, Watamu and Malindi, to the full marine specification, with quarterly service including a corrosion inspection. Trips are scheduled in blocks so several properties share the travel.

Can a safari camp run this on solar?

Yes, with the heater and chiller sequenced so they never start together, and the plunge sized to the water budget rather than the brochure.

How often does it need servicing?

Six months inland, three months at the coast and in the bush. Coastal visits include a corrosion inspection; bush visits include a dust inspection and a filter change.

We are on a borehole. Does that matter?

For a steam room, a great deal. Rift Valley and coastal borehole chemistry varies enormously, so we test at the property before specifying the generator.

My existing sauna never gets hot. Can you fix it?

Usually, and cheaply. Nine times out of ten it is an under-sized heater. Replacing it in a sound cabin is a fraction of a rebuild.

What is the payment schedule?

40% to start the drawing and order materials, 40% when panels leave the workshop, 20% on commissioning.
