Off-grid loads, sequenced

Most camps run solar with generator backup. A heater and a chiller are the two big loads and they must never start together, so we sequence them in the controls and size the plunge to the water budget rather than to the brochure.

Water is the harder constraint in the Mara and Amboseli. An insulated lidded tub loses far less to evaporation than an open one, which in a camp trucking its water is a real operating saving rather than a technicality.

Dust is the failure mode

Dry-season dust blankets a condenser in weeks. Washable pre-filters, sealed plant housing, shaded siting with real clearance, and a three-month service interval. In this part of the country dust, not salt, is what kills equipment.

We also leave a spares kit with part numbers, because the nearest replacement is a long drive and often a flight.

The evening peak

Everyone comes back from the afternoon drive at once. Two plunge positions per eight sauna seats keeps the circuit moving, and a shaded rest area with water matters as much as the rooms.

We train the camp's maintenance team properly at handover and return at six months, because there is nobody else nearby to call.
