Laikipia combines the two things that usually arrive separately: bush conditions and real altitude. Cold nights, hard dust, solar power and a long road from Nairobi.
High bush is its own case
Altitude means a heater correction; bush means dust; conservancy means off-grid. All three apply at once, which is unusual and which we specify for explicitly rather than picking one.
The compensation is that the cold plunge here barely needs a machine. Nights at this elevation do most of the work.
Local stone, imported timber
Laikipia has excellent building stone and lodges here already use it. We build plinths, plunge surrounds and benches from what is quarried locally, and import only the hot-room timber and the equipment.
One planned delivery
The road from Nairobi is long. Everything is prefabricated, packed to a checklist and sent in a single load with spares. On-site work is assembly, and we train whoever is there while we are on site.

Is altitude or dust the bigger problem?
Both, and they are separate. Altitude changes the heater; dust changes the service interval.
Do we need a chiller at this elevation?
For reliable 8 °C, yes, but a small one. The nights do most of it.
