Sauna and cold plunge questions, answered for Africa

Which countries do you build in?
Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Mauritius, Kenya, Tanzania, the Seychelles and Nigeria. The rooms are made in our factory in Istanbul, shipped through each country's port of entry and installed by our own crew.
Where are the cabins actually made?
In our own factory in Istanbul, where we have manufactured since 1987 under ISO 9001:2015. Cabins, benches, marble and mosaic are made in-house, and every cabin is dry-assembled and checked before it is crated for export.
Is a sauna sensible in a hot country?
Yes, if there is cold water next to it and you use it after dark — hot then cold is the whole point. Without the plunge it is a harder sell in most African climates, and we would tell you so before you buy.
How do you size a heater?
We take the cabin's insulated volume, allow about 0.85 kW for each cubic metre, adjust for the height of the site, add around 0.42 kW for every square metre of glass and round up to a heater that is actually made. The sum is written out in your quote.
Why do you insist on the lid for a plunge?
Because it is the cheapest item in the project and the one that saves the most. It stops evaporation and solar gain and holds temperature overnight, so the compressor starts the day where it finished. A lid nobody lifts is a lid nobody uses, so we make them light.
What is marine specification, in practice?
A4 stainless fixings throughout, hidden ones too; end grain sealed before the panels go together; an air gap under every outdoor cabin; cavities that drain and breathe; plant in a filtered housing; titanium where the chiller meets the water. Anywhere on an African coast we treat that as the baseline.
Can you work while a hotel stays open?
Yes, phased room by room behind screens with noise windows agreed in writing. If your calendar allows, the quieter months make it quicker and cheaper.
Do you handle permits and approvals?
We prepare the drawings and the submissions: conservation consent where a facade is protected, body-corporate approvals with a plant position and a noise figure, and grey-water routes where we are building inside a national park or conservation area.
How long does it take, and what is the warranty?
Each room takes six to ten weeks after you approve the drawing, plus the sea freight; a whole villa spa takes twelve to sixteen. The installation carries a 24-month warranty.
What happens if something fails?
A spares kit with part numbers is left on site at handover, and your team is trained to use it. After that we visit every three months on coasts and in dust and twice a year inland, grouping remote sites into shared trips.
Asked about Morocco
Do you build outside Marrakech?
Yes — Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Fès, Agadir, Taghazout, Essaouira, the High Atlas and Dakhla. The survey is done in person or by video, and the crated room travels from Tanger Med or Casablanca to your door.
How long does a private hammam take?
A single hammam or steam room runs 6–10 weeks from drawing approval to commissioning; a complete villa spa with hammam, sauna and plunge runs 12–16 weeks. Tanking needs a full day between coats and hand-cut zellige cannot be rushed, so those set the pace on site.
Is the equipment duty-free?
EU-origin heaters and controls can be, with a valid certificate of origin under the EU–Morocco agreement (trade.gov). Goods shipped from Turkey fall under a separate agreement that Morocco amended in 2022 to reinstate duty on a list of product lines (Morocco World News), so we check the tariff line for each item and quote landed, with 20% VAT shown separately (PwC Tax Summaries).
Can you work while our riad or hotel stays open?
Yes. Fabrication happens in the factory, so the loud weeks on site are short: demolition, chasing and first fix. We screen the work area, agree quiet hours and keep guest corridors clean.
Asked about Egypt
Do you work on the Red Sea?
Yes — El Gouna, Hurghada, Soma Bay, Sahl Hasheesh, Sharm El-Sheikh and Ain Sokhna, plus Luxor and Aswan. Crates for the Red Sea come in through Sokhna, and service visits are grouped so several properties share the travel.
Is a sauna sensible in an Egyptian summer?
With a cold plunge beside it and the session in the evening, yes. Without cold water it is a hard sell from June to September, and we would rather say so than sell a room you will not use.
Why is the service interval three months?
Dust and salt. A condenser on the desert edge blankets in weeks, and Red Sea salt attacks fixings continuously. Six-monthly service is a European interval that does not survive here.
What does hard water do to a steam generator?
Scales it solid, usually within two years on untreated mains. We specify a softener or a documented descaling routine as part of the room — the detail is in our note on hard water and steam generators in Egypt.

Do I actually need a chiller?
In a Cape or Highveld winter, for a 12–15 °C plunge, often not. For 8 °C year round, or anywhere on the KZN coast, yes. We tell you which before selling a machine.
Does Johannesburg's altitude matter?
Yes. At about 1,750 m the air is thinner and the heater is sized up. The correction is shown as its own line in the quote.
Is load shedding a problem for this equipment?
Not any more — the country has passed 475 days without it. We use the backup hardware households already own for efficiency instead: the chiller on a backed circuit, the heater scheduled into your solar window.
Do you build outside Cape Town?
Yes — Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and the KZN coast, the Winelands, the Garden Route and bushveld lodges. Crates land at Cape Town or Durban and continue by road.
Asked about Mauritius
Will a cabin survive a cyclone?
Anchored properly, yes. The tie-down detail is the first thing we draw, not the last, and on exposed sites an engineer signs it. Anchorage can also be retrofitted to installations that never had any.
Do I need a chiller?
On this island, yes, every month of the year. There is no cool season to lean on, so insulation, a lid and shade decide how hard the chiller works.
The villa is empty half the year. Is that a problem?
Not if it is designed for it: humidistat-controlled extract that runs unattended, a written shutdown routine, a caretaker checklist and, if you want it, remote temperature and leak alarms to your phone.
Why is the service interval quarterly?
Continuous humidity and salt. There is no dry month in which metal or timber gets a rest, so a six-monthly interval does not survive here.
Asked about Kenya
Does Nairobi's altitude really matter?
Yes, and more than most people expect. At 1,795 m we size the heater up about one step and show the calculation. A cabin that never gets properly hot in the capital almost always has a heater picked from a sea-level chart.
Do I need a chiller in Nairobi?
For a reliable 8 °C, yes, but a smaller one than the coast needs. For a shaded insulated tub at 14–16 °C, often none at all — and we will say so rather than sell you a machine.
Do you have a workshop or showroom in Kenya?
No. Everything is made in our own factory in Istanbul and shipped to Kenya as a checked kit; our installation crew travels to your site. We survey in person or by video and send photos of finished projects like yours.
Do you build at the coast?
Yes — Diani, Mombasa, Watamu and Malindi, to a full marine specification with A4 stainless and sealed plant, and quarterly maintenance visits that include a corrosion check.
Asked about Tanzania
Is a sauna worth building in Zanzibar's heat?
Paired with an ice-cold tub and used as the sun goes down, it becomes the evening ritual guests talk about. A hot cabin alone, in island heat, gets far less use — we will tell you that up front.
How much does the crossing to Zanzibar add?
A line of its own on the quote, plus a weather dependency. We send the whole project in one consolidated load with spares, so a forgotten bracket never means a second crossing.
Can you build inside Stone Town?
Yes. Every panel is sized to be carried through the lanes, the waterproofing stands clear of the old coral walls, and anything visible from outside goes to the conservation authority first — we prepare the drawings.
Is there somewhere in Tanzania to see your saunas?
We keep no showroom or local shop: production happens only at our Istanbul plant. Instead we send pictures and clips of finished rooms close to your brief, and our surveyor visits or joins you on a video call.
Asked about Seychelles
A lorry cannot reach our house. Can you still build?
Yes — that is normal on Mahé. We survey and photograph the path, size the panels to its narrowest point and show the carry as its own line.
Do I really need a chiller?
Yes. In no month of the year will a tub here hold plunge temperature on its own, and we would rather say so before you spend the money.
Can a plunge basin be carved from granite?
Yes. Basins are cut in our stone shop from a single block, and occasionally shaped from a sound boulder on your plot by a local stone contractor. Anything on a suspended structure needs an engineer's sign-off first.
Is there a showroom in the Seychelles we can visit?
No — production is concentrated in our Istanbul plant, which ships to Port Victoria. Instead of a showroom visit you get photographs and films of comparable projects, and a survey on site or by video call.
Asked about Nigeria
Can a home inverter power a sauna?
Frequently, if the heater is scheduled. We look at the inverter, batteries and panels before promising; if they cannot cope, the alternatives are an infrared cabin or a smaller cabin with a 6 kW heater.
What happens to the plunge when the grid drops?
Nothing, if it is on the side of the board the changeover feeds, which we verify. A lidded, insulated tub holds its temperature for hours and the chiller restarts by itself.
Have you built a sauna in Nigeria?
Yes: a private villa sauna in Ikoyi, completed in 2025. Ask on WhatsApp and we will send pictures.
Can we visit a showroom in Lagos?
There is none — manufacturing is concentrated at our Istanbul plant. A surveyor visits or meets you on a video call, and we share pictures of completed rooms instead.
