Saunas and cold water, anchored for a Mauritian coast

We design and build heat and cold rooms across Mauritius — a teak cabin on a lagoon deck in Tamarin, a carved basalt plunge in a Black River garden, a thermal suite for a resort at Bel Ombre. Everything is tied down to engineer-signed details and specified in A4 stainless, because this island gives nothing a season off.

Why it is different here

Three things this island does to a wellness installation

The wind is a design load

Cyclone season runs roughly November to May. A cabin is anchored on a continuous load path — roof to wall, wall to frame, frame to steel, steel to concrete — with straps and threaded rod rather than weight, and engineer-signed where exposure warrants it.

Nothing dries on its own

Warm air close to saturation will not dry a wet room overnight. Every enclosed room gets ducted mechanical extract on a humidistat, every cabin sits on a ventilated void, and every vapour barrier is continuous with sealed penetrations. A gap traps moisture in the wall, which is worse than no barrier.

The chiller runs every month

There is no cool season to help. Efficiency has to come from insulation, a lid people will actually lift and a shaded position — which together do most of the work a larger compressor would otherwise be asked to do.

How we work

A workshop in Pamplemousses and a spares box on every site

Panels, benches, doors and sub-frame steel are made on the island and delivered as sections. Timber and equipment are imported, so we order long-lead items first and do the deck, anchorage, drainage and cable run while the container is at sea.

Every installation leaves with a spares kit and part numbers on the lid. On this island a part that takes three days in Europe takes three weeks, and that box turns a closure into a ten-minute job.

Every quote separates the anchorage package and the marine specification so you can see exactly what the coast costs you, and choose a sheltered position if you would rather not pay it.

Questions

Mauritius: asked before every project

Will a cabin survive a cyclone?

Anchored properly, yes. The tie-down detail is the first thing we draw, not the last, and on exposed sites an engineer signs it. We also retrofit anchorage to installations that never had any.

Do I need a chiller?

On this island, yes, every month of the year. The argument about winter water that applies in the Cape or the East African highlands does not apply here.

The villa is empty half the year. Is that a problem?

Not if it is designed for it: humidistat-controlled extract that runs unattended, a written shutdown routine, a caretaker checklist and, if you want it, remote temperature and leak alarms to your phone.

Why is the service interval quarterly?

Continuous humidity and salt. There is no dry month in which metal or timber gets a rest, so a six-monthly European interval does not survive here.

Do you keep spares on the island?

The common ones, and we leave a kit on every site with part numbers. A shipment takes weeks and a guest will not wait.

Can you work on Rodrigues?

Yes — everything is prefabricated and sent in one planned load with a full spares kit, and we train whoever is on site while we are there.

Can I supply my own imported sauna kit?

We will install it and tell you in writing what we think it will and will not survive here. What we will not do is anchor a structure we have not assessed and put our name against it.

What is the payment schedule?

40% to start the drawing and order materials, 40% when panels leave the workshop, 20% on commissioning.
