Homes on the plateau, gyms in the city

In Moka and Curepipe the typical project is a private sauna in a family home, often with a steam room, and the design problem is damp rather than salt: ventilated voids, drained cavities and extract on a humidistat. Older Curepipe houses may have limited electrical capacity, so the board is checked before a heater size is promised. In Port Louis the work is commercial — gyms, clubs and office wellness rooms — where the slab, the drainage and the tenants set the programme.

Without salt air, fixings can be A2 rather than A4 and plant enclosures need not be sealed, which takes real cost out. Cyclone anchorage still applies inland, designed for a lighter exposure case.

Delivery and timing

Port Louis is where the crates arrive, so inland delivery is the shortest on the island. Rooms are built and dry-assembled in our Istanbul factory and take 6–10 weeks from drawing approval plus the sea passage; our own crew installs and commissions them. Damp, not salt: what changes in the specification

Curepipe and the higher plateau are the wettest part of the island, and timber there fails from constant damp rather than from salt. Cabins sit on feet over a ventilated void, cavities behind cladding drain at the bottom, and the timber is thermo-treated, charred or oiled teak. Every sauna and steam room gets ducted extract on a humidistat, which runs until the room is genuinely dry rather than for a fixed time.

Port Louis is the opposite climate a few kilometres away: the hottest, stillest air on the island, where a gym's chillers work hardest and are sized up accordingly. Sauna service visits inland run 9 to 16 thousand rupees; without the coastal corrosion check they can be twice a year for a household rather than quarterly.

Moka & the central plateau

The central plateau is a different island: several degrees cooler, considerably wetter, no salt in the air, and evenings that genuinely call for a hot room.

Cooler evenings sell the sauna

Up here the evening drops far enough that a sauna is a pleasure rather than an indulgence, and the season for it is longer than on the coast. It is the part of Mauritius where a sauna needs no persuading.

Wet rather than salty

Rainfall on the plateau is high, so the specification shifts from corrosion to water management: deeper drained cavities, ventilated voids under cabins, and extract that copes with genuinely damp air.

Cyclone still applies

Inland does not mean safe. Anchorage is still designed, though the exposure case is lighter than on the east coast and the details are correspondingly simpler.

Curepipe & Floreal

Curepipe is famously wet and cool by island standards. It is the one place in Mauritius where nobody needs the sauna explained to them.

Damp is the whole engineering problem

Persistent rain and high humidity mean nothing dries on its own, indoors or out. Mechanical extract on a humidistat, continuous vapour barriers, ventilated voids and thermo-treated or charred timber throughout.

Untreated timber here fails faster than anywhere else on the island, including the coast.

Cool enough for a plunge to behave

Mains water up here arrives cooler than on the coast and the nights are genuinely cool. A well-insulated shaded tub still needs a chiller for a reliable 8 °C, but it works far less hard than the same tub in Belle Mare.

Older houses

A lot of the good housing stock here is older, with limited electrical capacity. We survey the board before promising a heater size, and sometimes the right answer is a smaller cabin rather than an upgrade.

A well-insulated two-person cabin on a 6 kW heater is often the sweet spot in these houses: it heats quickly in the cool evenings and stays within what an older supply can carry.

Port Louis

Port Louis is the commercial island: offices, gyms, clubs and a city centre that is hotter and stiller than anywhere on the coast.

A hot, still city

The capital sits in a bowl and does not get the coastal breeze. Ambient here is the highest on the island, which makes it the hardest place for a chiller and the best place for a cold plunge to be genuinely wanted.

Commercial buildings

Most installations are in existing commercial space: slab loading checked before anything holding water, drainage worked out with the building, plant sited where a technician can reach it, and works scheduled around tenants.

Corporate wellness

A growing part of the demand here is offices rather than gyms — a small recovery room as a staff amenity. The brief is simple, robust, easy to clean and impossible to break, which is a different design from a private villa.
