Why a Karen tub is cheaper to run than a Diani one

Highland nights stay cool all year. A shaded tub with an insulated shell and a lid barely gains heat between midnight and dawn, so the compressor switches off and waits. By mid-afternoon it only has to hold the water, not pull it down.

On the coast the air is warm and wet at three in the morning. The same tub gains heat around the clock, so it gets a larger machine, a sealed and filtered plant enclosure against salt, and shade designed into the layout rather than hoped for.

Basalt, timber or built in

Basalt cut from one Kenyan block makes a dark, dense, thermally heavy tub; it holds its temperature better than any clad tub and weighs enough that we ask for the slab or deck detail before quoting. An oiled timber tub on a deck is the movable choice. A tiled or microcement basin cast into the floor is what a club or hotel usually wants.

Whichever you buy, it gets closed-cell insulation under the base as well as in the walls, a lid one person can lift, circulation, cartridge filtration and ozone or UV treatment whenever guests, staff or a second family share the water.

Cold plunge in Nairobi and the coast

In Nairobi most people who buy an ice bath put it in a Karen, Runda or Lavington garden under existing shade, or in a Westlands gym where the evening queue decides the number of tubs. Here a tub without a chiller is an honest option if 14–16 °C is cold enough for you; for a reliable 8 °C, fit a machine and let the nights do half its work.

From Mombasa south to Diani and north to Watamu and Malindi, a cold plunge for sale without a chiller is a warm bath by March. We fit the chiller in a ventilated, filtered enclosure away from the beach side, use A4 stainless for every fitting and put the tub under makuti or a pergola. The machine itself

An outdoor-rated unit with a titanium heat exchanger, because cold, moving, ozonated water pits ordinary stainless. The insulated flow and return lines enter low in the tub wall, so nothing hangs over the rim for a child to pull.

It works to a setpoint in cycles and leaves the overnight holding to the lid. Fewer running hours is what makes a compressor last well past its warranty.

Kenyan sizing, by altitude and air

Nairobi and the highlands: standard capacity is usually plenty, and a smaller unit is often enough because the cool nights carry part of the load.

Mombasa, Diani, Watamu: one size up, in a closed filtered cabinet with A4 fixings, because warm humid nights never give the compressor a rest.

Mara, Amboseli, Laikipia: one size up for daytime heat, a washable pre-filter against dust, and a condenser check every three months in the dry season.
