What goes into the plant

An outdoor-rated unit with a titanium heat exchanger, since the water it handles is cold, moving and usually ozonated. Insulated flow and return hoses entering low in the tub wall, so nothing runs over the rim. A circulation pump, a cartridge filter and an ozone or UV cell on the same loop. Anti-vibration feet, because neighbours are close and evenings are quiet.

The controller cycles the compressor around a setpoint rather than running it flat out, and the lid carries the tub through the night. Run that way, a compressor has a long working life instead of an early failure. The tub itself is covered on the cold plunge page.

Sizing by where you actually are

Hot coasts and lowlands — Lagos, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Mahé, Grand Baie, the Red Sea: we go a step above what a temperate catalogue suggests, because the machine gets no cool night off.

The bush in the dry season — the Serengeti, the Mara, the bushveld: capacity is seldom the problem; dust is. A coil furred with dust cannot shed heat whatever its rating, so the enclosure matters more than the horsepower.

Highlands — Nairobi, the Atlas, the crater rim: often a size smaller, sometimes nothing. The reasoning is set out in cold water in hot countries.

Enclosures for salt and dust

Beside the sea the coil is scoured by salt; in the harmattan and the dry season it is smothered in fine dust. The cure is the same for both: a housed unit breathing through washable pre-filters, raised off the ground and away from spray, with every wetted part in titanium or A4 stainless.

Service follows the climate — every three months on the coast and in dust, twice a year inland — with a corrosion check at the sea and a filter change in the dry months. Skip those and the conditions win; keep them and the unit outlasts its 24-month warranty by years.

Power, noise and placement

A 1 HP chiller runs on an ordinary circuit; on an inverter house it belongs on the backed-up side, with a soft starter where the supply is weak and an interlock against the sauna heater — details on the power integration page. In a cut, a lidded, insulated tub holds its temperature for hours and the unit restarts itself when power returns.

Acoustically it is close to an air-conditioning outdoor unit, quieter in an enclosure. We place it where it can breathe, be reached for service and not face a neighbour's bedroom.
