Cold plunge tubs and ice baths in Lagos and Abuja

A chiller every month of the year

Left alone, an insulated tub in Lagos settles near air temperature within a day or two. So the shell and floor of the tub are insulated, the lid is light enough that people close it, the tub goes in shade, and only then is the chiller chosen — a size above a temperate figure, because warm humid nights never let it rest. In Abuja the nights are a little kinder, but not enough to skip the machine.

On the circuit that stays live

A chiller is a steady load rather than a peak one. It suits solar during the day and is awkward for batteries at night, so the controls hold it off while the sauna heater warms up, push its heaviest running into sunny hours, and let the lid carry the water through the night.

It must also sit on the essential side of the changeover. A plunge wired to the non-essential board goes warm at every outage, and the owner blames the chiller.

Naira bands are indicative and track the exchange rate; the chiller, filtration and controls are imported, so the final figure is fixed in the contract after a site survey.

Cold plunge in Lagos and Abuja

Lagos buyers usually place the tub on an Ikoyi or Banana Island garden deck, a Victoria Island or Lekki penthouse terrace, or in a gym where the after-work queue decides how many tubs are needed. In Abuja the gardens of Maitama and Asokoro have more space and the air is drier, but the harmattan brings dust from December to February, so the chiller's intake is filtered and cleaned more often. Chiller sizing in Nigeria

An Ikoyi tub, a Maitama tub and a Port Harcourt tub need different machines. Picking one national size is how a compressor ends up running flat out for its short life.

Unit and housing

An outdoor-rated unit with a titanium heat exchanger, inside a louvred housing with washable intake filters, raised off the ground on anti-vibration feet because Lagos plots are close together. The pipes join the tub below the waterline, out of sight.

Lagos and Port Harcourt: one size above a temperate figure, plus marine-grade hardware against lagoon and delta air.

Abuja and the north: similar heat most of the year, but from December to February the harmattan coats a condenser in fine dust, so intake filtration and cleaning matter more than capacity.

Clients with houses in both cities get both specifications, not an average.

Maintenance

Maintenance contracts are offered with every chiller. Visits outside Lagos are grouped by region so several properties share the trip; coastal visits include a corrosion check, northern ones a dust inspection and filter clean through the harmattan months.
