Company residences and private homes in Port Harcourt, hotels in Uyo and Calabar competing on facilities, and homes and mid-sized hotels in Enugu. Hotels get the full hotel and club spa specification; homes usually start with a steam room or sauna and a chilled plunge.

Oil and gas companies in Port Harcourt also ask for recovery rooms for staff rotating off offshore shifts: a compact sauna and two cold tubs in a residence compound or clubhouse, built to the same demountable standard as their leased houses.

Humidity, rain and marine-grade detail

Borehole water is common across the region and its hardness varies widely, so any steam generator is chosen only after the supply has been tested; in the wettest months, harvested rainwater is sometimes the softer option.

Port Harcourt

Port Harcourt, the oil capital of the Niger Delta, is the most humid of our main Nigerian markets, and much of its best housing belongs to companies rather than individuals.

Properties here usually carry large generator and inverter capacity, which widens the choice of heater. The work is the same as in Lagos: schedule, interlock and confirm the changeover circuits.

Uyo

Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, has invested heavily in hotels and event venues for a city of its size, which makes a well-built thermal suite a real competitive facility.

Hotel-grade from day one

A Uyo hotel suite is specified like one in Lagos: the equipment guests rely on installed in pairs, each room able to close on its own valves, written water-care procedures and every guest-facing circuit fed through the changeover. Staff are trained at handover and we return after six months.

Close to the delta

High humidity all year and brackish air within reach call for humidistat extract, drained cavities, filtered plant housings and marine-grade fixings; the corrosion check stays on every visit.

Grouped visits and spares

Uyo visits are combined with Port Harcourt and Calabar properties so travel is shared, and a labelled spares box stays on site.

Calabar

Calabar, the Cross River State capital known for its December carnival, is one of the wettest cities in Nigeria, and anything built here must be detailed for rain first.

Rain as the design condition

Deep eaves on cabins, a ventilated void beneath them, real falls on decks, and plant housings that are raised, roofed and never placed where surface water gathers. A cabin that would just survive a Lagos wet season fails here within a couple of years.

Riverine humidity

The air is close to saturation much of the year, so enclosed wet rooms get humidistat extract to the outside, cavities are drained and fixings are A4 stainless. The plunge itself is straightforward: a Lagos-sized chiller and the same water care as any warm, shared tub.

Hotels and the carnival season

Calabar's hotels fill for events and the December carnival and invest in facilities that photograph well. We recommend a compact thermal suite with doubled plant, built for the climate first.

Enugu

Enugu, the 'Coal City' of the south-east, sits among hills a few hundred metres above sea level, and its nights are noticeably cooler than anywhere on the coast.

Cooler nights, a smaller machine

A shaded, lidded tub holds its temperature better here than in Lagos or Port Harcourt, so the chiller can be smaller and runs fewer hours. The elevation is far below the point where a sauna heater needs an altitude correction, so the hot side is standard.

Slopes and access

Many of the better plots are on sloping ground, sometimes without vehicle access to the house. We survey the carry route and size panels to its narrowest point, and price the carry separately.

Hotels competing on facilities

Mid-sized Enugu hotels increasingly compete on facilities, and a compact thermal suite — sauna, cold tubs, a rest area — costs a fraction of a Lagos hotel spa and runs more cheaply.
