Saunas and cold plunges in Lagos: Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki

Lagos is where most Nigerian saunas and ice baths are built: garden cabins on Banana Island and in Ikoyi, terrace plunges on Victoria Island towers, infrared cabins in Lekki flats, recovery rooms in mainland gyms. Every one has to cope with lagoon humidity and a grid that cannot be relied on.

Lagos, Nigeria

Our Lagos reference: an Ikoyi villa sauna, 2025

Our clearest Lagos example is a private villa sauna we delivered in Ikoyi in 2025. The cabin crossed from our Istanbul works as a complete, pre-tested kit and our crew assembled it on site. Two Lagos-specific choices made it work: ventilation air borrowed from the villa's air-conditioned rooms, so the humidity outside never gets in, and a heater on its own circuit, chosen only after we had measured how steady the house's supply really was.

That is the pattern for every Lagos project: a custom sauna wired to your inverter, a cold plunge tub with a chiller on the circuit that stays live, and, for towers, the checks on our terrace installation page.

Power in Lagos

Grid supply is 230 V single phase and 400 V three phase, but few households plan around it: Band A customers pay about ₦209.50 per kWh (NERC, late 2025) for a promised 20 hours a day, and nearly every serious home runs an inverter, batteries and a generator. We place the heater and chiller in that system — scheduled, interlocked and on the essential board — — the method is explained here.

Indicative Lagos budgets

Treat the naira figures as a guide, because the currency moves (it ended 2025 at roughly ₦1,445 per dollar on the CBN's NFEM window); the contract is fixed in USD or EUR after the survey.

From the port to your gate

Crates clear at Apapa, Tin Can Island or Lekki Deep Sea Port and reach the islands, Lekki or the mainland by road. Each room spends six to ten weeks in production once you approve the drawing; after the sea passage and port clearance, fitting it takes days. Share the room or garden size and your inverter and generator ratings; by the next business day you will have an opening budget and pictures from Ikoyi.

Banana Island

Banana Island, the reclaimed estate off Ikoyi in the Lagos lagoon, holds some of the largest private houses in Nigeria, and nearly all of them already run a serious inverter, battery and generator system.

Power is there; the job is placing the load

Here the question is not whether a sauna can run but where its load sits. We read the house's inverter rating, battery bank and generator size, put the heater on its own scheduled circuit, hold the chiller off while the heater warms, and confirm both are on the side of the board the changeover keeps alive.

Lagoon air on reclaimed land

Brackish lagoon air reaches every garden. Fixings are A4 stainless, cut timber ends are sealed in the factory, each cabin sits on an air gap above the ground, and the chiller goes into a filtered, raised housing on the side away from the water, which also keeps it out of sight and out of the neighbours' hearing.

Estate rules and discretion

The estate controls contractor access, working hours and anything built outside. We prepare the submission — drawing, elevation, plant position, noise level — and book deliveries so no truck waits on the estate road. Owners here want the room, not the machinery, so hoses are buried and controls sit in a cupboard.

Ikoyi

Ikoyi mixes old Lagos houses with deep gardens and new apartment towers on the same streets. It is also where we completed a private villa sauna in 2025.

A villa sauna we finished here in 2025

The Ikoyi project was a private cabin for a family house. Its lesson for neighbours considering the same is simple: in a house that is air-conditioned anyway, the sauna can borrow that dry indoor air for ventilation, which keeps the room crisp rather than muggy. The rest — timber choice, the layers behind the lining, the heater's own circuit — is set out on our custom sauna page.

Gardens with real shade

The older Ikoyi plots have mature trees, and a plunge under that canopy costs noticeably less to run than one on open paving. A cabin, cold tub, shower and shaded bench take roughly 14–18 m².

Old boards, close neighbours

Some houses still have electrics extended several times since the inverter arrived. We check the board and the inverter arrangement before choosing a heater size. Boundaries are tight, so the chiller goes on the house side behind louvres, on rubber mounts, fan pointing away from the neighbour.

Victoria Island

Victoria Island is Lagos's business district of towers, hotels and offices along the Atlantic, and almost everything built here goes onto a terrace or into a commercial spa.

Three checks before a price

The service lift's height, width and diagonal; whether the terrace slab can carry close to a tonne of water; and whether the existing membrane was ever meant to sit under a permanently wet installation. Panels are then made to pass the lift with room to turn.

Where the water goes

A roof gully sized for rain is not sized for a full tub emptying at once. The discharge is designed, because water in the apartment below is the most expensive failure a tower terrace can produce.

Hotel spas on the essential board

For VI hotels the defining requirement is continuity: heaters, chillers, lighting and extract on circuits the changeover feeds, restarting in sequence so the generator does not trip on inrush.

Lekki

The Lekki peninsula, stretching east from Victoria Island, is where most of Lagos's new housing has gone up — newer buildings, newer inverters, smaller plots and many tenants rather than owners.

Infrared for flats and tenants

For an apartment or a rented house an infrared cabin answers every constraint: about 2 kW from a dedicated socket, a load any home inverter carries, no drain and nothing fixed to the building.

New estates, modest systems

Many new-build houses come with an inverter sized for lights, fans and a fridge rather than a sauna heater. We read the actual specification; where it cannot carry a convection cabin we say so, and where owners have added solar, a compact cabin on a scheduled circuit is realistic.

Compact plots

Here the set-up that earns its space is modest: a cabin for two to four, a compact chilled tub and a shower, all within about 8–10 m². Near the Lekki Deep Sea Port and the newer eastern estates, crates arrive quickly once cleared.

Ikeja & the mainland

Ikeja, capital of Lagos State and home to the international airport, has older GRA houses on larger plots, hotels serving airport traffic, and gyms across the mainland. We have no workshop here — our cabins are made in our Istanbul factory — but the mainland is one of the easier parts of Lagos to build in.

GRA houses and larger plots

Ikeja GRA and the older mainland estates have more garden than the islands, so a full arrangement — cabin, plunge, shower, shaded bench — fits without squeezing. Many houses sit on busier grid feeders but still rely on an inverter and generator, so the heater and chiller are scheduled and interlocked like anywhere else in Lagos.

Hotels and gyms near the airport

Airport hotels and mainland gyms want compact recovery rooms: two cold tubs and a small sauna on the essential board, with water treatment that survives heavy daily use.

Delivery on the mainland

Crates cleared at Apapa or Tin Can reach the mainland by road without the bridge traffic to the islands, which makes deliveries and installation days easier to plan.

Ibadan

Ibadan, the Oyo State capital about two hours inland from Lagos, has bigger plots, drier air than the lagoon and a straightforward road link to the Lagos ports.

Room to spread out

Generous plots make the full set-up — cabin, plunge, shower and shaded seat — comfortable rather than squeezed, and less of the budget goes into making things fit.

Inland, not coastal

Away from the lagoon the salt problem mostly disappears, so fixings and enclosures step down a grade. The wet season is still humid, so extract and drained cavities stay, but the corrosion check becomes annual.

From the port by road

Crates cleared at Apapa or Tin Can travel up the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in one consolidated load; maintenance visits are grouped with other Ibadan properties.

Abeokuta

Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital an easy drive north of Lagos, grew up around the granite outcrop of Olumo Rock, and granite still breaks the surface on many plots — as does the town's tradition of indigo adire cloth.

Building among the rocks

Where rock is close to the surface, a cabin plinth pinned into it is the cheapest permanent base, and outcrops can become walls and backdrops rather than obstacles. Where a client wants stone in the cold plunge, a cast terrazzo basin or a stone surround is usually more practical than cutting into the rock itself; we look at the site before suggesting either.

Indigo in the details

Abeokuta's adire tradition suits a rest area well: a framed dyed panel, or indigo tones in the mosaic of a steam room. It is a local choice for the client to make with local makers, and we design the room so it can take it.

Inland specification, road delivery

Away from the lagoon, fixings and enclosures step down a grade and maintenance intervals lengthen. Crates come up by road from the Lagos ports in one load.

Questions

Lagos: what people ask

How much does a sauna cost in Lagos?

Indicatively ₦7.5–11.3 million for a four-person cabin with one glass wall, supplied and installed, plus the power integration line. The naira figure is confirmed in the contract.

Have you built a sauna in Lagos?

Yes. The Ikoyi villa sauna of 2025 is our local reference, and we are happy to share photographs.

Will a sauna run on my inverter?

A compact cabin on a scheduled circuit often will; an infrared cabin almost always will. We check your inverter and battery figures first.

Will our inverter carry a sauna on Banana Island?

Usually, given the systems in these houses. We confirm it from your inverter and battery figures before promising.

Have you built a sauna in Ikoyi?

Yes — a private villa sauna in 2025, made in our factory, shipped as a kit and installed on site. We can share photos on request.

Can a plunge go on a Victoria Island penthouse terrace?

With the slab confirmed and the drainage designed, often yes. Without the structural check we will not quote.

I rent in Lekki. What can I have?

An infrared cabin that you take with you when you move. Anything fixed needs your landlord's written consent.

Is there a Lagos workshop or showroom?

No. Our cabins come from the Istanbul plant and are shipped to Lagos; we send photos of finished work, including our 2025 Ikoyi villa sauna, and survey in person or by video.

Is it cheaper to build in Ibadan than in Lagos?

Usually, because access is easier and the coastal specification steps down a grade.

Can a plunge be cut into the rock on our plot?

Rarely worth it; a cast terrazzo basin set against the rock usually gives the look for far less risk. We assess the site first.
