Saunas & cold plunges in Constantia

Constantia is old money on generous ground — oaks, vineyards, Cape Dutch gables and plots big enough that the wellness zone does not have to compromise.

Constantia, South Africa

Room for the whole sequence

With space to spare we build the complete arrangement: cabin, plunge, rinse shower and a covered bench, with the plant hidden behind planting. That completeness is what turns a room used twice a week into one used most evenings.

Mature oaks give deep shade, which means a plunge here holds temperature on far less compressor time than one on an exposed terrace.

Building near a heritage gable

Cape Dutch buildings and their settings are protected, and a modern cabin next to a whitewashed gable needs to be either clearly of its own time or clearly subordinate. We tend towards charred timber and low profiles, set away from the main house rather than against it.

Cape winter, which sells the room

From May to September this is genuinely cold and wet. A sauna in a Constantia winter is the most used room in the house, and the plunge outside it does not need a chiller for half the year.

Questions

Constantia: what people ask

Do we need heritage permission?

For a freestanding cabin away from a listed building, usually not. Against one, yes, and we prepare the drawings.

Does a plunge need a chiller here?

Not in winter. In a Cape February, yes, if you want it reliably cold.
