Saunas & cold plunges in Bushveld lodges

A bushveld lodge is an off-grid engineering problem with a hospitality brief attached, and the peak is the ninety minutes after the afternoon drive.

Bushveld lodges, South Africa

Off-grid loads, sequenced

Most lodges run solar with generator backup. Heaters and chillers are the two big loads and they must not start together, so we sequence them in the controls and size the plunge to the water budget rather than to the brochure.

Dust is the enemy here

Dry-season dust blankets a condenser in weeks. Washable pre-filters, shaded and ventilated siting, and a three-month service interval. In this part of the country dust, not salt, is what kills plant.

The evening peak

Everyone comes back at the same time. Two plunge positions per eight sauna seats keeps the circuit moving, and a rest area with shade and water matters as much as the rooms themselves.

We also train the maintenance team properly, because the nearest alternative is a long drive away.

Questions

Bushveld lodges: what people ask

Can a lodge run this on solar?

Yes, with the loads sequenced so heater and chiller never start together. We work with your energy contractor.

How often is service out here?

Three months in the dry season. Dust on a condenser is the main failure mode in the bushveld.
