What a sauna and cold plunge actually cost in Tanzania

Why the crossing is the Tanzanian price driver

Every crate we send to Tanzania clears customs at Dar es Salaam. A mainland client then pays for a lorry and a day on the road. A Zanzibar client pays for a second journey: the crates are loaded onto a cargo vessel, cross to Malindi port in Stone Town, are handled again on the quay and trucked to the villa. Each handling is a chance for delay, and each depends on the sea.

That is why we never fold the island leg into the materials line. It appears on its own, so you can see what the channel costs and plan around it — and so we are forced to send everything in one consolidated load rather than discovering a missing bracket after the boat has gone.

Mainland prices, before the water

Treat these as guide prices for a fitted room; the firm figure comes after we have surveyed the site in person or on camera. The cabin, heater, benches and controls are made and test-assembled in our Istanbul factory; the electrician's cable run and any civil work are listed separately. What the channel adds, line by line

The crossing itself is priced per project, because it depends on volume and on whether the load can join a scheduled sailing or needs its own space. Around it sit the costs clients rarely expect: port handling on both sides, a truck from Malindi port to the east coast, which is about an hour's drive, and a margin of spare fixings and consumables that we send deliberately, because nothing specialised can be bought on the island.

Our crew's travel follows the same logic. We group Zanzibar installations and maintenance visits so several properties share one crossing, and the service surcharge for islands and parks — TZS 0.3 to 1.4 million per visit on our price list — is divided between them.

Salt: the island premium after the boat

Once on Unguja the cabin meets salt air every day. Every fixing becomes A4 stainless, cut timber ends are sealed at the factory before the panels are joined, the cavity behind the cladding is deeper and drained, the cabin sits on a ventilated void and the chiller lives in a filtered cabinet. On our price list that marine package is TZS 3–9 million, and it is the difference between a cabin that still looks right in ten years and one that is streaked with rust after two monsoons.

Dar es Salaam needs part of the same package on the Msasani peninsula and less of it inland; the northern circuit needs none of it. Our island build specification lists exactly what changes.

Stone Town's last hundred metres

In the old town the lorry stops where the lanes narrow, and the crates finish the trip on handcarts and shoulders. We walk the route before quoting and size every panel to its tightest turn. The carry is its own line, TZS 2–7 million depending on distance, stairs and the number of turns, and anything visible from the lane needs conservation consent before we order.

Pemba and Mafia: the longer crossings

Pemba and Mafia are reached by smaller boats on less frequent schedules, and most properties generate their own power. The factory time is unchanged; the shipping and the planning grow. We send one load packed to a checklist, add solar and generator sequencing to the controls, and leave a fuller spares box than we would on Unguja.

Cold plunges on either side of the channel

On Zanzibar and in Dar a plunge without a chiller sits near air temperature within days, so the chiller is part of the price, not an option. At Arusha or on the Ngorongoro rim the reverse is often true. Our cold plunge price page for Tanzania covers both.

Running costs: grid, generator and sun

Tanzanian households paid on average about TZS 230 per kWh in late 2025, according to GlobalPetrolPrices. A 6 kW heater used for an evening session draws around 4–5 kWh including warm-up, roughly TZS 1,000–1,200. A chiller holding a coastal tub at 8 °C may run ten to fourteen hours a day, which is where most of the monthly bill comes from.

Many island villas run on a generator for part of the time, and a kilowatt-hour from diesel costs several times the grid price. There the lid, the shade and a chiller sized honestly for the ambient save more than any tariff choice.

Keeping the island budget from growing

Decide every finish and every piece of equipment before the crates are packed; a change after shipping means another crossing. Ask for the marine specification, the crossing and any carry as separate lines, so they cannot hide inside a lump sum. Insist that the cabin is assembled and checked before it ships. And budget for a maintenance contract from the start, because on the island a quarterly visit is cheaper than an emergency one.
