A steam room on an island where the air is already humid lives or dies by how it dries out afterwards. On Mahé it often has a second challenge: one wall is bare granite.

wedi boards, and a clean seal to the rock
Walls and ceiling are lined with wedi building boards — we have been official wedi sellers since 2015 — each seam taped and sealed; beneath the tiles the floor gets a liquid membrane and a screed dropping at least one in fifty to the drain. A gently vaulted or sloping ceiling lets condensation slide down the walls rather than fall on the people sitting below.
Where the room is built against exposed granite, the board system stops at a sealed edge detailed into the rock face rather than leaving a gap to chance. Getting that junction right takes more time than the rest of the tanking.
A humidistat decides when the fan stops
After each session a fan ducted to the open air clears the room several times over. It runs on a humidistat, because a timer cannot tell a dry trade-wind afternoon from a saturated monsoon evening, and a fan that stops too early leaves a warm, wet room that starts to grow things.
Air ducted into a ceiling void instead of outside simply moves the water into the roof.
PUC mains, rainwater or borehole
Supplies here change through the year and between properties: PUC water, harvested rain, a borehole. We test the one that will feed the generator; rain is soft and gentle on it, while hard borehole water calls for a softener or an auto-flush generator.
Finishes and prices
Green glass mosaic and honed granite benches suit the islands better than grey porcelain, and they cost more; the quote shows the difference line by line.
Resort steam rooms add two things a villa room does not need: a generator sized for doors opening every few minutes through the evening, and an automatic flush cycle so the tank does not scale between monthly services. Both are on the commercial quote from the start.

Why does extract matter so much in the Seychelles?
Because the outside air is already humid, a steam room cannot dry itself by opening the door. The fan does the work.
Can the steam room back onto bare granite?
Yes. The boards stop at a sealed edge worked into the rock face, and that junction takes more care than anything else in the room.
We run on harvested rain. Does that suit a steam generator?
