Only with an engineer's sign-off. Usually the answer is a clad insulated tub instead, and we will say so.

Is the granite cold to sit in?

It holds cold beautifully, which is exactly why it is worth the trouble.

Can you use a boulder already on my plot?

Sometimes — it depends on the stone. We look at it before promising.

Plunge basins carved from island granite

These islands are made of granite. A plunge basin carved from a block off your own hillside is the one thing we build that could not exist anywhere else.

How it is made

A block is selected, split, and the inner bowl cut and honed smooth while the outer faces are left split and raw. The contrast between the two is the whole point: the outside looks like the boulder it came from and the inside is precise enough to sit in comfortably.

Behind the stone there is insulation and a waterproof backing doing the thermal and structural work. The granite is the finish and the mass; it is not the tank.

Weight, which is the reason we survey first

A carved basin is measured in tonnes before any water goes in. On a ground-level terrace over rock that is straightforward. On a suspended slab, a balcony or a timber deck it is a structural question with a real answer, and we get an engineer's opinion before quoting rather than after.

This is one of the few things we will refuse outright: a stone basin on a structure nobody has checked.

Getting it to the site

Carved on Mahé, moved by crane where a crane can reach and by tracked machine, rollers and a temporary track where it cannot. On a hillside plot the access route is designed as carefully as the basin, and it is priced as its own line.

For Praslin, La Digue and the outer islands the block travels by barge, which sets the maximum size we will quote.
