Villa saunas and hammams: Palmeraie, Ourika road and High Atlas

What gets built outside the city

Palmeraie villas usually take the whole sequence outdoors: a cedar-lined sauna or a hammam pavilion, a chilled plunge in shade, a rinse shower and a rest bench, with the plant hidden behind planting. On the Ourika-road estates the best time to call us is before the landscaping, so the drain and the three-phase cable go into an open trench. Lodges around Imlil and Oukaïmeden want robust guest saunas, often wood-fired, and a plunge that mountain water keeps cold for most of the year.

Villas and estates normally have three-phase at 380/400 V. A lodge at the end of a valley may have a weak single-phase line or a generator, and at 1,700 to 2,600 metres the heater also needs extra capacity for thinner, colder air — we recalculate on your actual elevation.

Delivery and timing

Crates come through Tanger Med and then by road to the gate. Above Imlil the last stretch is on mules, so the factory splits the cabin into loads a mule can carry and our crew assembles on site. A single room takes 6–10 weeks from drawing approval; a full villa wellness suite takes 12–16.

Golf estates along the Ourika road have their own rules on external works, plant noise and contractor hours, so we prepare the drawing, the plant position and a noise figure for the estate before anything ships. Send us the plot plan or a video of the garden, and we come back with a layout and an itemised quote.

Palmeraie

The Palmeraie is where the constraints disappear. Level ground, big walled gardens, vehicle access to the gate and, usually, a three-phase supply already at the house.

Space for the whole sequence

With room to spare we build the full arrangement outdoors: hammam or sauna, plunge, rinse shower and a shaded rest bench under a pergola, with the plant hidden behind planting. That completeness is what turns a room used twice a week into one used most evenings.

Palm shade is the other gift. A plunge basin under palms in the Palmeraie holds temperature far better than the same basin on an exposed terrace, and the chiller runs less for it.

Villas that are still being finished

A lot of Palmeraie work happens on houses under construction, which is the cheapest moment. Drainage, a three-phase run and a level plinth cost almost nothing while the ground is open and a great deal afterwards.

Dust from the piste

Several Palmeraie lanes are unsurfaced, and dust is what kills chiller condensers here. We fit washable pre-filters, site units away from the approach and shorten the service interval to three months through the dry season.

Amelkis & Route de l'Ourika

South-east of Marrakech, along the Ourika road and around the golf estates, the plots are large, the houses are new and the Atlas is on the horizon. It is the easiest ground we build on.

New build is the cheap moment

Most of this work happens while the house is going up. Putting the drainage, the three-phase run and a level plinth in while the ground is open costs a fraction of retrofitting them, and it means the wellness suite can be completed a year later without breaking anything.

We would rather talk to your architect than be handed a finished room with no drain in it.

Designing towards the mountains

The view south is the Atlas, snow-capped for a good part of the year. We orient the glass and the plunge towards it and put the solid walls to the west against the afternoon sun, which is both the better picture and the lower running cost.

Golf estates here have their own standards for external works, plant noise and contractor hours. We prepare the submission — drawing, elevation, plant position and a noise figure — because a cabin refused after delivery is an expensive way to learn the rules.

High Atlas & Imlil

In the High Atlas the sauna sells itself. Guests come off Toubkal or the Oukaïmeden slopes genuinely cold, and at 1,700 to 2,600 metres the evenings do the marketing for us.

Altitude and cold, both in the sum

Up here we add heater capacity for thinner air and insulate far harder than in Marrakech — floors as well as walls, because these buildings sit on cold ground and lose most of their heat downwards.

The same cold is a gift for a plunge: mountain water arrives cold and a basin barely needs a chiller. What it does need is pipework inside the insulated envelope, because winter nights here go below freezing.

Wood fire earns its place

This is the part of Morocco where we actively recommend a wood-fired heater. Fuel is local, the fire is part of the evening for guests who have been outdoors all day, and it works when the power does not — which at a remote lodge matters more than in the city.

Getting materials up the valley

The road ends before most lodges do. The last stretch is mule or porter, so panels are sized to what a mule can carry and everything is prefabricated and dry-assembled in our Istanbul factory first. On-site work is assembly, not cutting.
