Hot and low: the plunge does the selling

Unlike the crater rim, it is hot here for most of the year, and guests coming off a boat safari or an afternoon drive want cold water first and heat second. We build the plunge larger, shade it properly and size the chiller for genuinely warm ambient.

Sauna still belongs on the deck — the contrast is what people come back for — but here it is the second act.

Fly-in logistics change what we can build

Where a lodge is reached by light aircraft, component weight and dimensions are set by the aircraft, not by the design. We plan the whole installation around that limit from the first drawing rather than discovering it at the airstrip, and we build in panels that two people can carry.

Where there is road access we send a single consolidated truck from Mikocheni and accept the drive.

River humidity and dust together

Riverine lodges get humidity and seasonal dust in the same year, which is an awkward combination. Sealed filtered plant housings, humidistat extract on any enclosed wet room, and a service interval set by whichever season is currently worse.
