Five Elements Africa

Saunas & cold plunges in Pemba

Pemba is greener, quieter and considerably harder to reach than Unguja, and everything about how we build there follows from that second fact.

Pemba, Tanzania

One shipment, packed to a checklist

Getting materials to Pemba means a boat and a schedule. We consolidate an entire project into a single shipment, pack it against a written checklist, and include a generous margin of fixings and consumables, because a second trip is not a phone call — it is a week.

Cabins are dry-assembled in Mikocheni first so that nothing is found missing on an island where nothing can be bought.

Equipment that a small team can keep running

Lodges here run with small maintenance teams and no supplier nearby. We specify robust, simple, serviceable plant, train the team properly at handover, and leave a spares kit with part numbers on the lid: element, thermostat, cartridge, hose seals, A4 fixings.

That box is the single most valuable thing we leave on Pemba.

Marine specification and self-sufficiency

Full salt specification throughout, plus solar-and-generator load sequencing, because most properties here make their own power. Heater into the solar window, plunge holding overnight on its lid, and nothing starting at the same moment as anything else.

Questions

Pemba: what people ask

How long does a Pemba project take?

Ten to fourteen weeks, most of the difference being shipping rather than building.

Who services it afterwards?

We visit in scheduled blocks, and your team handles the routine work with the kit and training we leave.
