Altitude and cold, both corrected for

At this elevation the heater needs a real correction upward and the plunge needs almost no machine at all. Cold night air does the work a compressor does on the coast, and an insulated lidded tub on the rim holds plunge temperature by itself for most of the year.

Floors are insulated as heavily as walls because the ground up here is cold, and every pipe run stays inside the insulated envelope. Freezing is not a theoretical risk on the rim.

Off-grid and conservation-area constraints

Lodges here run on solar and generators inside a protected conservation area with rules on works, noise, waste water and materials. We sequence loads so nothing starts together, design the grey-water route properly, and prepare the drawings the authority expects.

A plunge is also a water-budget decision: water is trucked or pumped, so the tub is sized to what the lodge actually has and an insulated lid is an operating saving rather than a detail.

The view is the product

A deck facing the crater with a cabin and a hot bench on it is a photograph that sells rooms. We put the glazing where the view is and accept the heat-loss penalty, then pay for it with better insulation everywhere else.
