Beach plots on soft ground

The beach here is soft and the water table is high. Cabins go on piled or raft plinths rather than slabs poured on sand, and we test the ground rather than assuming. A plunge basin set into soft sand without a proper base will move, and once it moves the membrane goes with it.

Marine specification, mainland logistics

Salt exposure is the same as the island; logistics are far easier. No ferry leg means a forgotten bracket is a morning's drive rather than a two-day round trip, which shortens programmes and reduces what we have to over-order.

We still leave a spares kit, because the difference between an hour and a morning matters to a hotel in season.

Historic fabric in the old town

Parts of Bagamoyo are protected and the old coral-and-lime buildings behave exactly like Stone Town's: absorbent, thick-walled and unforgiving of a badly detailed membrane. Same approach, same care, easier access.
