Moka & the central plateau

Read more →Curepipe is famously wet and cool by island standards. It is the one place in Mauritius where nobody needs the sauna explained to them.

Persistent rain and high humidity mean nothing dries on its own, indoors or out. Mechanical extract on a humidistat, continuous vapour barriers, ventilated voids and thermo-treated or charred timber throughout.
Untreated timber here fails faster than anywhere else on the island, including the coast.
Mains water up here arrives cooler than on the coast and the nights are genuinely cool. A well-insulated shaded tub still needs a chiller for a reliable 8 °C, but it works far less hard than the same tub in Belle Mare.
A lot of the good housing stock here is older, with limited electrical capacity. We survey the board before promising a heater size, and sometimes the right answer is a smaller cabin rather than an upgrade.
Constant damp with no drying period. Salt is harsh but intermittent; this is continuous.
Often not in an older house. We survey the board first.
