Of everything we make, the carved stone plunge basin is the thing clients come back and talk about — because the block came out of the ground near where it ended up.

Five stones, five countries, five behaviours

Pink-grey granite in the Seychelles. The Inner Islands are the only granitic ocean islands on earth, and on most plots the rock is not an obstacle to be removed but the best material available — frequently the boulder is already standing where the basin will go.

Dense black volcanic basalt in Mauritius and Kenya. It is heavy, close-grained, takes a honed finish beautifully and looks like nothing else when wet. In Mauritius it is the material the island is built from; in Kenya it comes off the Rift.

Pale porous coral rag on Zanzibar, which has been used in that architecture for centuries and looks like it grew out of the plot, because in a sense it did.

Creamy, faintly translucent alabaster in Egypt, where the quarrying and carving tradition is older than almost anything else in this business and where the craftspeople are genuinely specialists.

And cast indigo terrazzo in Lagos, which is not quarried at all but is unmistakably of the place — and which solves the weight problem on a tower terrace in a way solid stone cannot.

Honed inside, split outside

The block is split, the inner bowl cut and worked down to a finish smooth enough to sit against comfortably for ten minutes, and the outer faces left raw and split. That contrast is the entire design. From outside it reads as the boulder it came from; inside it is precise. Polishing the outside would make it look like a kitchen worktop and lose the point completely.

The bowl gets a gentle ergonomic profile rather than a bucket shape, so an adult sits with shoulders under water and shins comfortable. Getting that right takes longer than the rough cutting and it is the reason we would rather you sat in one at a workshop before ordering.

The part nobody sees, which decides whether it works

Stone has enormous thermal mass and is not an insulator. A basin with cold water in it and nothing behind it bleeds heat into the ground and the surrounding air continuously, and the chiller pays for that every hour of every day.

So behind the stone there is rigid insulation and a waterproof backing doing the thermal and the structural work. The stone is the finish and the mass; it is not the tank. Done that way, the mass that would have cost you money becomes an advantage — the basin holds temperature beautifully overnight under a lid.

One practical consequence: because the mass is large, a stone basin takes longer to pull down from warm than a clad tub does. Fill it, let the chiller work overnight, then hold it there under the lid rather than letting it drift up between sessions. Run that way it is cheaper to own than a clad tub, not dearer.

Weight, and the conversation it forces

A carved basin is measured in tonnes before any water goes into it. On a ground-level terrace over rock that is a non-issue and we get on with it. On a suspended slab, a balcony, a Lagos tower terrace or a timber deck it is a structural question with a real answer, and we get an engineer's opinion before quoting rather than after.

This is one of very few things we refuse outright: a stone basin on a structure nobody has assessed, whatever a client is willing to sign. Where the structure will not take it, the honest alternative is an insulated clad tub — lighter, cheaper and it works extremely well. It simply is not carved from the island, and we say that plainly rather than pretending the substitution is equivalent.

Moving it, which is most of the logistics

Carved in our yard, then moved by crane where a crane can reach and by tracked machine, rollers and a temporary track where it cannot. On a hillside plot the access route for the basin is designed as carefully as the basin itself and priced as its own line.

For islands the block travels by barge, and the barge sets the maximum size we will quote. That is a hard limit rather than a negotiation, and we establish it before drawing anything. On La Digue, where there are almost no cars, it sets whether the basin is possible at all — and where it is not, we say so at survey stage rather than after a deposit.

Occasionally the right answer is to carve on site. Where a suitable boulder is already in the right position and cannot be moved, we bring the tools to the stone. It is slower, dustier and the result is unrepeatable.

Living with stone in an African climate

There is very little maintenance in the stone itself. All five materials are chemically stable, unaffected by ozone and entirely indifferent to salt air, which is close to ideal for these coasts. No sealing, no oiling, no annual treatment — a wipe of the rim and a scrub of the bowl when the tub is drained is the whole routine.

Two practical notes. A honed surface shows mineral deposits from hard fill water more readily than a polished one would, so on a borehole supply we suggest filling through a simple cartridge filter. And never use acidic descalers on the stone: they are formulated for the steel inside a steam generator and they will dull a honed face permanently.

Everything else is water care rather than stone care, and that is the same for any plunge anywhere: filtration, ozone, a lid and a change every four to eight weeks.

Choosing a block, and when we decline one

Not every boulder is worth carving. We look for sound stone without through-going fractures, a grain that will hone cleanly, and a shape that already suggests the finished object — fighting a block wastes weeks and occasionally ends with nothing.

Where a client has suitable stone on their own plot, that is the best possible outcome and we will always look first. Where they do not, we work from quarried and salvaged blocks held in our yard, and we show you the actual stone before carving rather than a photograph of a different one.

And sometimes we look at a boulder and say no. A cracked block that fails halfway through carving costs weeks, there is no repair worth having, and it is far better to disappoint somebody at survey stage than after a deposit. That judgement is most of what experience buys in this part of the work.

Why it is worth the trouble

Commercially it is the thing guests photograph, and on a resort or lodge that matters more than any specification sheet. Domestically it is what makes a wellness area feel like it belongs on a Seychellois hillside or a Zanzibar beach plot rather than in a catalogue.

And practically, it is a piece of the place that will still be exactly where you put it long after the cabin beside it has been re-lined twice. It is not the cheapest answer and we do not pretend otherwise — but of everything we make on this continent, it is the thing people write to us about years later.
