La Digue has almost no cars. Everything moves by bicycle, by ox cart, by small truck where one is permitted, or on foot — and that governs the whole design.

Everything is sized to what can be moved

This is the most extreme access constraint in the country, and it is a design input rather than an obstacle. Panels are built small and light enough to be carried or handcarted, joints are engineered rather than improvised, and the whole cabin is dry-assembled at Providence first so no fitting is discovered on the island.

Heavy items — a granite basin, a large heater, a chiller — are planned around the ferry and the single permitted vehicle route, and where something cannot realistically be moved we design a different answer rather than promising one.

Small properties, honest scale

Most of the work here is guesthouses and private houses rather than resorts. A compact cabin, a well-insulated plunge and a rinse point, built properly and serviceable by the owner, does more for a small property than a suite it cannot maintain.

We train owners rather than maintenance departments here, and we leave a spares kit because getting a part to La Digue is a Mahé order, a Praslin crossing and then a bicycle.

Boulders and beach

The granite formations here are the most photographed in the Indian Ocean and they are on people's plots. We design with them, carve basins where the stone allows, and specify everything for constant salt exposure.
