Chillers in continuous humidity

A chiller here runs every month of the year, in salt-laden air, at ambient temperatures that never really drop. That combination sets both the specification and the service interval.

Chillers in continuous humidity

What we install

An outdoor-rated cabinet with a titanium heat exchanger, because the water is cold, circulating and usually ozonated. Insulated hoses connecting low in the tub wall so nothing crosses the rim. A sealed, filtered enclosure so the unit breathes filtered rather than salt-laden air.

It runs to a setpoint in cycles and lets the lid do the overnight work. Continuous running is what kills compressors, and an insulated lidded tub is what prevents it.

Sizing for a tropical year

1 HP to about 260 litres, 2 HP to about 570, 4 HP to about 1,200, stepped up for full sun, a 4 °C target or heavy shared use. On this island we step up more readily than we would in a temperate market, because there is no cool month to recover in.

Service and the cyclone routine

Quarterly: condenser, pressures, cartridge, ozone cell, hoses, water test, plus a corrosion inspection of every fixing and the enclosure.

Twice a year, around the cyclone season: check the anchorage, secure or remove loose items, and run the shutdown or restart routine depending on which end of the season it is.

In short

  • Titanium heat exchanger and a sealed, filtered plant enclosure
  • Sized up from the standard tables — there is no cool month here
  • Quarterly service including a corrosion inspection
  • Cyclone shutdown and restart built into the service calendar
Questions

Chillers & plant in Mauritius

Can you service a unit I bought myself?

If parts are obtainable. Send the model number before you buy — island logistics make an orphaned unit a real problem.

How loud is it?

About a domestic air-conditioning outdoor unit. In a sealed enclosure with filtered ventilation, quieter.

What happens during a power cut?

An insulated lidded tub holds temperature for many hours and the unit restarts by itself.
