Altitude and cold, both in the sum
Higher than Nairobi means a larger heater correction and harder insulation — floors as well as walls, because these buildings sit on cold ground.
The same cold is a gift for a plunge. Mountain water arrives cold and a basin here barely needs a chiller, though pipework must run inside the insulated envelope because nights drop close to freezing.
Wood fire earns its place
This is the part of Kenya where we actively recommend a wood-fired heater. Fuel is local, the fire is part of the evening for guests who have been outdoors all day, and it works during a power cut, which at a remote lodge matters more than in the city.
Off-grid and dust
Most Laikipia conservancies run solar with generator backup, so heater and chiller are sequenced so they never start together. Dry-season dust means washable pre-filters and a three-month service interval.
